“The Lottery” Written by Jackson (1948)

A literary work, especially prose can be analyzed through some elements, as follows: setting, character, plot, point of view, symbol, theme, and style. Every text can be looked from that plot or can be seen through what happens in the story, and is there a central conflict/ problem in the story.

The text entitled “The Lottery” which is written by Jackson has some conflicts or problems, for example the conflict appears when the original parapherrnalia for the lottery has been lost long ago, and the black box now resting on the stool. This story seems like other prose which has some stages or steps to develop the story such as exposition, complication, climax, and resolution.

This story is developed from exposition that is showed in the first paragraph tells about the differentiation between two villages in conducted the lottery in their village. That introduces about the story in the beginning.

The parts of the story that attract the reader is the climax stage. One of the climax is showed in “When there was each villager who has one chance to open the lottery”.

The plot of this story is unlinear or anachrony, that means any variation/ deviation on chronological progression in a plot of the story. There some analepsis in the story, for example in the second paragraph the author tells about a boy who stuffed his pockets full of stones, and other selecting the smoothest and roundest stones. Then, the author continues about the children who had stones in almost last paragraph.
